"PASTORAL NOTES"
Extravagant Discipleship

Dear Parishioners and Friends,

Here's the thing: the older I get, the more I come to understand and experience the Kingdom of God in dynamic, extravagant terms. I have come to see more clearly that Jesus teaches paints the Kingdom in bright, bold colors, never in beiges or pastels. Read Jesus' parables, the stories of the Kingdom and you'll see how true it is. AT THE SAME TIME, (here's the rub), the older I get, I find myself sometimes slipping into a complacency, or a comfortable contentment about life. When I was younger, I wanted to change the world…now I am happy to just change myself, and that only in minor, little ways. I realize, of course, with age, comes limits. But, then, there is Jesus preaching about a Kingdom that goes beyond limits, a Kingdom not contained by practicality, a Kingdom that is bigger than my imagination. But my imagination isn't what it used to be. Isn't that sad?

Thank God, then, for the poor, old widow we meet in today's Gospel (the gospel doesn't tell us she is old, but historically she is pictured that way and for my purposes here, it works if she is old!). "The Widow's Mite," her story is called. The woman gives EVERYTHING she has, her entire livelihood. This teaches me something. Perhaps it is possible to grow older and still live as an extravagant disciple. The Poor Widow is the Patron Saint of Wild Discipleship. "Help us to give all and everything for the sake of God's Kingdom!"

Extravagantly yours,
        Fr. Rich

An Example of Extravagant Living:
National Donor Sabbath
November 10-12, 2006

Organ donation saves lives! Nearly all the world's religions support organ donation - the Catholic Church is one of them. More than 28,000 organ transplants were performed in 2005, but as of April 2006, over 92,000 people were on the organ transplant waiting list. Lives can be saved by donation and transplantation, but only when generous individuals and families say yes to donation. Contact NJ Sharing Network at 973-379-4535 or www.sharenj.org. Thank you!

Both divisions of GYM will be assembling Thanksgiving bags for the Mount Carmel Guild at today's meeting. We need cans of green vegetables, stuffing mix, gravy, rice or instant potatoes, cranberry sauce, and desserts. Please be generous with your donations-we will only be packing bags from what YOU bring in! Having much means having much to give!

Small Faith Sharing Group Reflection Guide
Cycle B - November 19, 2006 - 33rd Sunday in Ordinary Time

READ THE SCRIPTURES
Read the Sunday Scriptures out loud together. Afterward, mention which Scripture passage touched you and why. What does the passage mean to you in your own life at this stage of your personal spiritual journey?

1st Reading: Daniel 12: 1-3
2nd Reading: Hebrews 10: 11-14, 18
Gospel: Mark 13: 24-32

Reflection on the Gospel Reading
The 2005-2006 Liturgical year ends next week. Today's Gospel passage from Mark is about end times and the final days of humanity. Jesus addressed His disciples about how the world's light will fail to compare with His own power and glory. Jesus will gather His faithful disciples from every place in creation to be with Him. Jesus promised that His words would never pass away. The final day was known only to the Father

Reflection Questions:

  • Believe: How do I feel about encountering Jesus at the end of time as He appears with great power and glory?
  • Share: In light of today's Gospel, how do I feel about having all people with Jesus at the end of time?
  • Transform: In light of today's Gospel, what do I believe is the ultimate destination of creation?

PRAY FOR EACH OTHER
Pray together for any petitions and any needs that you might have. Stand in a circle together and say the Our Father. Pray daily this week for the person on your right.

LEAVE TO EVANGELIZE YOUR WORLD
Reflect on your mission to grow deeper in your relationship with God. Be welcoming, offer hospitality and work for transformation in your daily life. Suggestions for this week:

  • Believe: In prayer, imagine yourself witnessing the final coming of Jesus at the end of time, when He sends an angel to gather you to Him. Tell Him what you think and how you feel.
  • Share: Ask the Holy Spirit to guide you this week to invite someone hungering for love and meaning to attend Mass with you.
  • Transform: Do something to address the conditions of homelessness, poverty, hunger, illiteracy - to help others find greater justice and peace in their lives.

Having a Baby?

Just as you are preparing a room for the new baby, or just as you are taking Lamaze classes, why not prepare yourself spiritually by attending the Pre-Baptism Workshop prior to giving birth? As all couples asking to have a child baptized are required to attend, many are finding it helpful to do so before birth. Once your child is born, it is increasingly difficult to find time to get away. Make a date night of it; first the workshop at 7:30pm, then a late night dinner or dessert at an area ice cream establishment!

Baptism Preparation

Because Baptism is such an important sacrament and celebration in the life of your child, we ask parents to participate in a two-part preparation program. One part deals with attending a BAPTISM WORKSHOP (read the above notice) held once a month in the church; the second part includes a HOME VISIT FROM A TEAM MEMBER OF OUR BAPTISM HOSPITALITY TEAM, Parents: do not be surprised and please do welcome members of our Team who call to set up a time they can come to meet with you in your home to share important information about the sacrament of baptism. Thank you!

Formation of New Planning Teams

Next year we are planning 3 large-scale programs for the spiritual development of our parishioners. This will not be a life-long commitment, but only until the conclusion of the event (and an evaluation of it). We hope that each planning team is composed of 50% parishioners who are already active in a parish ministry and 50% of parishioners who are not currently involved in a parish ministry. If interested, we ask that you sign up for only one planning team. Please fill out and return this printable form to the Parish Office, in care of Sr. Jean. If you have questions, feel free to contact Sr. Jean or Fr. Rich. Thank you.

(Bulletin, June 25, 2006)

Chuck Moscarello, a parishioner, has completed his first year of formation in our Diocesan Diaconate Program. Our parish is sponsoring Chuck as he prepares to be ordained a deacon for service in the Diocese of Trenton. Chuck has been very involved in our Youth Ministry Program and will be leading the youth to Appalachia this summer.

Michael Hall, a parishioner, has just completed his "pre-theology" year at St. Mary's Seminary in Baltimore. Mike is studying for the priesthood for service in the Diocese of Trenton. Please keep him in your prayers as he discerns the Lord's call in his life.

Susan Commini and Maureen Cozzi, both parishioners, are enrolled in the Diocese of Trenton's Institute for Lay Ecclesial Ministry, a formation program for service in the church that includes theology, spirituality and ministerial experience.

Jewel Brennan, also a parishioner, has recently graduated from St. Charles Seminary in Overbrook, PA, with a Masters in Systematic Theology. Congratulations, Jewel! She is currently enrolled in the Doctor of Ministry program at the Catholic University of America in Washington DC.

Mr. Jason Briggs, a parishioner and also the Vice Principal of our elementary school, is also enrolled in the Diocesan Institute for Lay Ecclesial Ministry. Mr. Briggs did a wonderful job in his first year as Vice Principal. We are thrilled to have him as a member of our parish.
